Another petition, ‘”A
Body for Every Body”… Prove you mean it, Victoria’s Secret!’
calls for the company to use “curvier, more realistic supermodels” in
its campaigns and runway shows.
It comes months after Victoria’s
Secret was forced to change its “damaging” ads that
depicted a line of thin models with the phrase “The perfect ‘body’”.
The company kept the image, but after more than 26,000 people signed the
petition, changed the slogan to: “A body for every body”, referring to its
‘Body’ bra range.
Victoria’s Secret’s new ad
Around 3,500 people have signed the two new petitions, which comes as Sports
Illustrated magazine made history by featuring a plus-sized model in
a new #CurvesInBikinis ad.
People are now calling for the global fashion brand – which controls 35
per cent of the lingerie market – to offer
sizes larger than a UK size 20.
The fashion industry defines plus-size clothing as sizes 16 to 28, though many
retailers offer up to size 32 to meet demand.
Typically Victoria’s Secret uses skinny models known as ‘angles’ in its annual
fashion show, but there is now demand for a wider range of body shapes to be
on display in the show.
“They are sending a message to the world that you have to be a [size 4 to 6]
to be beautiful and worthy of wearing lingerie,” writes Brittany Cordts on
her petition calling for curvier models.
“Victoria’s Secret is promoting self-loathing and it needs to stop. It’s time
for them to realize that they have a social responsibility to stop
encouraging a toxic body image to tens of millions of teens and women.”
The company has not yet responded to our request for comment.
