Fans of “Community” rallying around the “six seasons and a movie” battle cry may soon get their wish granted.
The critically lauded, but ratings-challenged cult hit had been cancelled by NBC after five seasons, but Sony TV is in talks with Hulu to bring back the show for another go-round, Deadline first reported.
There is precedent for that sort of revival: Netflix had success bringing back another cult sitcom, “Arrested Development,” years after Fox had pulled the plug.
Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images Dan Harmon (righ, pictured with two of his show’s stars, Ken Jeong and Yvette Nicole Brown in 2011) previously said he would not stand in the way if the show could be revived. “Community,” with an ensemble cast headlined by Joel McHale, would be a major addition to Hulu’s original programming slate.
The video-streaming site’s new CEO Mike Hopkins vowed last month to position Hulu into a major alternative to traditional networks .
Vivian Zink/NBC Fans have long rallied behind the idea of six seasons and a movie for the ratings-challenged comedy series that ran five seasons on NBC. Earlier this month “Community” creator Dan Harmon seemed lukewarm on his blog at the prospect of reviving the show elsewhere.
“(But) I’m not going to be the guy that recancels cancelled Community,” he blogged at the time.
