SANTA CLARA, Calif. — With a heavy heart, San Francisco 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin played and produced the team’s biggest play of the year Sunday against the New York Giants.
After San Francisco’s 31-21 win, Goodwin posted to his Instagram account that he and wife Morgan’s baby boy died Sunday morning because of complications during her pregnancy.
“Unfortunately, we lost our baby boy due to some complications, and had to prematurely deliver him early this morning around 4 a.m.,” Goodwin wrote. “Although we are hurt, I am grateful for the experience and grateful that God blessed me with a wife as courageous and resilient as Morgan.
Beathard leads 49ers past Giants 31-21 for 1st win of season
C.J. Beathard threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third score to lead the San Francisco 49ers to their first win of the season with a 31-21 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday.
“The pain (physically, mentally emotionally) that she has endured is unbelievable. Please pray for the Goodwin family.”
Despite the devastating loss, Goodwin managed to play Sunday and came up with an 83-yard touchdown pass from quarterback C.J. Beathard in the first quarter, the longest play from scrimmage by a 49er this season.
A clearly emotional Goodwin evaded New York cornerback Janoris Jenkins and then blew a kiss to the sky before he crossed the goal line. He then knelt in prayer in the end zone as his teammates surrounded him.
Goodwin quickly exited the locker room after the game to return to his family. The 49ers have a bye this week and won’t return to practice until Nov. 20.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Four days after the New England Patriots claimed him on waivers, tight end Martellus Bennett made an immediate impact in limited action during the team’s 41-16 victory over the Denver Broncos on Sunday night.
Bennett played seven snaps and finished with three catches for 38 yards. Playing his first snap with 5:18 remaining in the first quarter, Bennett caught a short pass from Tom Brady and ran for a 27-yard gain. Four plays later, he was on the receiving end of a 5-yard pass. Bennett, who is playing through a shoulder injury, entered the medical tent on the sideline after the play and didn’t return to action until the second half.
Patriots dominate Broncos, now control AFC East
The Patriots took control of the Broncos early and now have a firm hold on the division and conference race.
NFL Playoff Picture: How the bracket looks right now
If the regular season were over right now, here’s how the top six would look in each conference. Plus, a rundown of which teams are in the hunt.
The shoulder injury was what led the Packers to waive him Wednesday with a “failure to disclose a physical condition” designation. Bennett disputed that the Packers didn’t know about his shoulder, posting an Instagram story that detailed his side.
After the game, Bennett said he spoke to “six or seven doctors” regarding his injury and initially decided to get shoulder surgery.
“It’s been a surreal week for me,” Bennett said, adding that he told his agent to inform teams to not claim him off waivers.
“When Bill [Belichick] called and said they had claimed, I said ‘No f—ing way,’” Bennett said. “Then he was like, ‘What’s going on?’ And I told him, and then we had a quick conversation, and he was like, ‘Let me think about it, and I will call you back.’”
Brady said Bennett did a great job, considering the quick turnaround.
“I love having Martellus on our team,” Brady said postgame. “He adds a lot. He is a great player and was for us last year. Hopefully we can keep building on it.”
Meanwhile, as Brady welcomed back Bennett, he connected with tight end Dwayne Allen for a touchdown for the first time as he inches closer to the NFL record for number of scoring pass targets.
Brady’s touchdown pass to Allen — Allen’s first catch with New England — came with 25 seconds remaining in the second quarter and made Allen the 68th target to which Brady has thrown a touchdown.
The NFL record is 70, set by Vinny Testaverde.
