DoYouGreen Can Turn Old Christmas Trees Into Lingerie

If you have a Christmas tree in your home right now, you’re probably planning to put it out on your curb with the rest or your garbage in a week or two. But in the future, you might be able to give your old tree a new life as something else.
French company DoYouGreen has come up with a way to turn pine trimmings into a soft fabric, perfect for garments like lingerie. The fabric is smooth, thin and naturally anti-bacterial. In addition, it requires no chemical processing to go from wood to fabric. So it’s even more of an environmentally friendly process than other wood-based fabric materials like bamboo.
Founder Sophie Young told Fast Company:
“Of course you can’t transform a tree into fabric without using something. If we are wearing lingerie it must be very thin, very comfortable. But the process is natural because of using a lot of enzymes. And you must remember that even something like cotton can’t have colors without chemical processing.”
The material was originally developed by an architect who wanted to find a use for tree trimmings that weren’t fit for construction projects. So it’s clear that the environmental factors really drove the creation of this material. But being green doesn’t automatically mean that consumers will line up for a new product.
In this case, the material works perfectly for a product like lingerie. So there’s a selling point beyond the eco-friendly aspects.
As a result, DoYouGreen offers a little something for everyone. Thee is the usability of the product that makes it a practical product customers either need or want. And then there is the recycled aspect which adds interest from an environmental point of view. So it will obviously have greater appeal to customers who care about environmental issues.
The big questions remains whether people will buy it? Could the future belong to clothing made from old pine trees?

Meldrum woman’s cancer charity honour

An Oldmeldrum woman has been honoured by a prominent cancer charity.
Anne Geach is one of nearly 100 supporters from across Scotland to feature on Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s Supporter Wall, which was unveiled earlier this month.
The wall recognises individuals and organisations who have each raised more than £1,000 for the organisation, the UK’s leading research charity dedicated to stopping women dying from breast cancer.
Supporters are invited to nominate a name to appear on the wall with many people choosing to pay tribute to loved ones that have survived or died from breast cancer.
Anne founded the Breakthrough Oldmeldrum Fundraising Group 16 years ago but has recently decided to step down as chairperson.
The Aberdeenshire organisation has raised more than £150,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer through a series of events including a hoedown, lingerie evenings, coffee mornings, bake-offs, and a summer food festival.
Elaine Anderson, chairperson of Breakthrough Oldmeldrum Fundraising Group, and her committee decided to include Anne’s name on the Supporter Wall as a tribute to her fundraising efforts over the years.
Elaine said: “It was a very special moment when I saw Anne’s name unveiled on the Supporter Wall. It’s a really nice way to acknowledge her fundraising achievements.
“Breast cancer continues to have a huge impact on the lives of so many people and it’s quite inspirational to see the list of names, all of whom have been affected by the disease in some way.”
She added: “Charities such as Breakthrough have already made amazing advances in understanding and treating breast cancer but women are still dying.
“Until the day arrives that we can finally conquer this awful disease we need to continue to help fund charities and their ground-breaking research so that we can save more lives faster.”
James Jopling, Director for Scotland at Breakthrough Breast Cancer said: “We are incredibly grateful to supporters like Anne and the Breakthrough Oldmeldrum Fundraising Group who do incredible things to fundraise for us.”
This year, there are nearly 100 names listed on the wall which is displayed in the charity’s Scottish office, in Edinburgh.
