The planned Atlanta franchise of the Lingerie Football League, which has scheduled two games in Gwinnett in 2013, has announced an open tryout date in the Atlanta area in November.
According to a league news release, the tryout will be on Saturday, Nov. 10 in Fairburn, which is in southeast Fulton County. The location will be Score Indoor, 1245 Oakley Industrial Boulevard, 30213. The session begins at 1 p.m.
Participants are asked to wear athletic gear, and arrive an hour before the session begins. Applicants will be judged on agility, speed, strength and focus.
The tryout application can be downloaded here, and should be brought to the session.
Those selected at the tryout will advance to an Atlanta mini-camp; no details have been announced for that.
The LFL has scheduled games for April 13 and May 18 at the Gwinnett Arena in 2013.
In the LFL, football is seven on seven, with no punting or field goals. The league currently has 12 teams, divided into four divisions. Team nicknames include Sin, Temptation and Charm.
On Oct. 31, LFL officials announced the league had received nearly 4,300 name suggestions for the new Atlanta team. The name most often submitted — the Atlanta Steam.
“The Atlanta name submission was one of the most successful team name submission responses of any LFL expansion market,” officials stated in a press release. “Additionally, LFL league offices have received greater interest from prospective players than in any other market in the history of the league.”
In an Oct. 3 article, we asked Dacula Patch readers to share their name suggestions for the new Atlanta team. Suggestions included:
- Atlanta Angels
- Gwinnett Undergarments
- Gwinnett Garterbelts
- Gwinnett G-stringers
- Duluth Divas (2 votes)
- Duluth Babydolls
- Sugarloaf Sugardaddies
- Gwinnett Hot Dawgs
- Gwinnett Queens
- Georgia Peaches
What do you think of “Atlanta Steam” as a team name? Do you plan to go see the Steam play (or frolic as the case may be)? Let us know in the comments.

Sexy Sylvie van der Vaart: Lingerie Model, WAG, Breast Cancer Survivor

During the month of October, for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we featured stories of celebrities who have fought breast cancer and won. It’s November now, but there’s one more celeb we’d like to note: Sylvie van der Vaart.
Have you heard of Sylvie van der Vaart? She’s better known in Europe than on this side of the Atlantic, but she’s worth learning about. She’s a model and TV presenter, and is married to star footballer Rafael van der Vaart of Hamburger SV. They’re often called the Netherlands’ most famous football couple; she’s often called Queen of the WAGs.
In 2009, Sylvie found a lump in her breast, and was diagnosed with breast cancer. At the time, she said learning the news was devastating.
”For me, it was as if a bomb had gone off under our lives. Whether you are rich or poor, beautiful or ugly, young or old, cancer knows no boundaries.’All the luxuries in the world are no protection against that moment when you are told the diagnosis. Then you are just a woman.”
Her treatment included surgery and six months of preventive chemotherapy. When she began losing her hair to the chemo, she had her head shaved and ordered a wig. She wore her wig as a judge on Germany’s Got Talent. But by the time she appeared on Let’s Dance, Germany’s version Dancing With The Stars, she had “a couple of inches of hair.” Encouraged by Rafael, she bravely decided to shed her wig, live, in the middle of a dance number. She said:
“It was a new beginning. Every centimetre of hair was life for me.”
Sylvie’s cancer in remission, she returned to the catwalk earlier this year, modeling for Hunkemöller, an Amsterdam-based lingerie company. She also does print work for them; take a look:
