Saudi Arabia has shut down over 7,000 lingerie stores after a police raid found the shops employing men to sell the items meant to be worn by women.
Local newspapers said 7,127 shops were raided by the police after reports that they were employing men. The authorities have shut down the lingerie stores and have asked the owners to pay a fine of SR10,000 (about $2,600 or Rs 1.75 lakh), Emirates 24/7 reported.
“During visits to markets, ministry inspectors caught 7,127 shops offending the new rules,” said a Suadi ministry statement. The official statement added that the government was poised to intensify the raids to ensure compliance to the rule.
In 2012, the late King Abdullah had issued a royal decree banning men from selling female ware at lingerie stores, following a series of complaint from women who said they felt uncomfortable buying wearables around “strange” men.
Since then, nearly half the lingerie shops in Saudi Arabia have shut down as undergarment stores are unable to find women to work in them.
According to the Saudi Gazette, the 2012 rule has been welcomed by Saudi women, but has hit businesses hard.

With her due date just around the corner, Kim Kardashian is clearly looking forward to getting back her pre-baby body.
On Wednesday the star shared a raunchy throwback as she posed in a pale pink corset and sheer black leggings.
With plenty of flesh and her famous curves on show in the stylish shot, Kim looked as gorgeous as ever.
“TBT skinny days #Imissu,” she wrote next to it.
Fortunately her army of fans were right behind her ready to shower her with compliments and tell her it won’t be long before she’ll return to her normal weight.
“You’ll be back soon Kimmy and you’ll have a beautiful boy to show for it. It’s all so worth it!” one encouraged.
While another shared: “You’re beautiful no matter what size you are.”
Back in August Kim described how she she suffered from pre-eclampsia during her first pregnancy, causing her to bloat – and sparking cruel criticism about her weight.
Describing it as the “worst” experience, Kim said: “I couldn’t help it, and everyone would say, ‘She can’t stop eating.’ I delivered at 180, and they were like, ‘She’s 210 pounds.
“‘She’s getting dumped because she’s too fat’ and all these ridiculous stories. It really took a toll after the fact, when I was losing weight. I gained 50 pounds, and it’s tough to get it off.”
