What’s your background, and what inspired you to start a bedding line?
After double-majoring in visual design and apparel manufacturing at college, I worked with some of LA’s best wardrobe stylists. After a handful of years I quickly realized the need for personal style to live not only in our closets but extend through into our homes. I believe your bed and home should be as well-dressed as you! Living in a city where, culturally, many more people see your handbag than your home, I felt the obliged to revive the pride and individuality inherent to one’s sanctuary. I was constantly searching, but couldn’t find anything unique enough for my own space. That’s when I decided to create my first collection of duvet covers, pillow shams, and throw pillows.

What prompted you to add lingerie into the mix?
I’ve always envisioned Cloud Hunter to blossom into a California-made lifestyle brand with many different products. After two bedding collections and two years of custom linens, I thought it appropriate to include lingerie as a next step.

What’s the inspiration behind your designs?
Cloud Hunter’s main inspiration is California! Every piece from Cloud Hunter’s debut lingerie and loungewear collection is designed with the ability to wear at home, or out and about. Nothing says California chic more than something that’s couch and café appropriate. I always describe both my collection and LA as ‘playfully chic.’

Who’s your ultimate design muse?
Anna Dello Russo is very inspiring to me as you can see from our latest lookbook! I recreated her watermelon and cherry headdresses for our shoot. For me, Anna has mastered a perfect mix of femininity and fun.

Where are a few of your favorite places to relax in LA?
Any and every meal of the day at Redhill, the pool and pina coladas at the Ace Hotel downtown, the michelada popsicles at Diablos, my bed during a rare rainy day, and Silver Lake dog park!

Delicate Cycle: How to Wash Your Lingerie

Harper’s BAZAAR: How often should you wash a bra?

Claire Chambers: We typically recommend that you wash your bras after 5-7wears.

HB: What’s the best way to wash bras and panties to make them last longer?

CC: Hand-washing sounds tedious but it’s actually pretty easy, and we definitely recommend it for most of the lingerie we sell at Journelle.com.  Combine your similarly-colored delicates in a sink of warmwater, and add a delicate wash that’s specially formulated for lingerie (such as Forever New or our Linden Lingerie Wash made by The Laundress). Swish around a few times, gently squeeze and then lay flat to dry.

HB: Are there any fabrics that are okay to just throw in the washing machine?

CC: Err, not in my opinion.

HB: If you don’t always have time to hand wash, what’s the next best way to wash?

CC:  If you must use a washing machine, there are four important rules:  1) use a gentle cycle, with warm (never hot) water. 2) Put your delicates in a lingerie bag to ensure they don’t get snagged or twisted. 3) Use the same delicate lingerie wash you’d use to hand-wash. 4) Never, ever use the dryer!

HB: What’s the best way to dry your lingerie?

CC: You should always lay your lingerie flat to avoid stretching out the band or straps.

HB: How should you store your lingerie?

CC: Bras can be stored in a drawer, place them behind each other, almost like they’re spooning. Make sure you don’t turn the cups insideout into each other.

HB: How long should your delicates typically last?

CC: It depends on so many factors… the quality of the piece, how often you wear it, and how carefully you care for it.  We always recommend that you rotate your bras, so that even your favorite gets some time off in-between wears.  This allows all the stretchy materials to return to their proper shapes.  At Journelle, we tell our customers that a bra will last up to a year when cared for properly, and possibly longer.
