JACKSON, WYO – Bras for a Cause raises money for women’s health care

Oh, the booby. Seat of many of our culture’s dreams and values. Nurturance, desire, comfort, allure, fertility, beauty, manna. Hotness.

And for those of us who have them, the boob can also be a site of tenderness, discomfort, and potential disease. This is one conflicted little mama.

For nine years the Soroptimists of Jackson Hole have hosted Bras for a Cause, a spring celebration of tetons, pardon my French, to raise money for breast cancer research and women’s health. This is not an event for those who are shy about enjoying sexuality or a wee bit of objectification. Tatas are on display, adorned with locally designed bras that are auctioned to the highest bidder.

The festivities include a runway show of bras worn by local models and lots of drinking and merriment. Last year, the event raised $60,000.

This year’s event will continue to benefit the Women’s Health Care Fund here in Jackson and support breast cancer awareness. The organization helps uninsured and under-insured women in our community receive health care and treatment for a variety of women’s health exams, including pelvic exams, health profiles, PAP smears, bone density scans, mammograms, breast ultrasound and breast biopsies.

Supporters bid on bras sponsored by a diverse array of Jackson businesses, including Harley Davidson, Dental Care of Jackson Hole, Stio, Pinky G’s Pizzeria, Snake River Brewery, 3 Creek Ranch Golf Club, Dwelling, Training to be Balanced, and many more.

One of the brassieres as art will manifest in the form of confections, like Persephone Bakery’s “D-Cup Cakes” designed by Persephone owners Ali and Kevin Cohane. “We wanted to do an edible bra but it had to be made six weeks in advance and obviously that wouldn’t work,” said Ali. “So I make frosted cupcakes for the cups with a combination of things from the hardware store (foam filler and spackle, beads and glitter). We donated a $100 gift certificate so whoever wins can make sure to get lots of the real thing!”

Another style will be classic Wyoming, found in “Let’er Buck,” designed by AJ Holding for Altamira Fine Art. It’s a sweet, proud Bronco delight based on the University of Wyoming license plate. Festooned with bright yellow ribbons in the style of county fair awards, the cups say “22 University” with a bucking bronco logo.

Other lovelies include “High Beams,” sponsored by Chester’s Jackson Hole Harley Davidson and designed by Deb Scott. Valued at $1500, the winner of this bra gets a complete ladies riding package including a leather jacket, chaps, gloves, fleece, headband, and wallet, plus a two-day bike rental.

There is also “Kitty Glitter,” “Ménage à Bra,” “Eiffel Towers,” “Nice Rack,” “Upholstered Boulder Holder,” “Man’s Best Friend,” and a passel of creatively named and designed bras to bid on.
