Woman Gets Prison for Stealing $285K From Nuns to Buy Lingerie, Manicures

An Irvine woman was sentenced Friday to 37 months in federal prison for defrauding a group of Roman Catholic Sisters out of $285,000, which she spent on lingerie, manicures and valet pet-sitting services for her dog.

Linda Rose Gagnon, 59, was found guilty of three counts of wire fraud in November 2013 for defrauding the U.S. Province of the Religious of Jesus Mary (RJM), an order of nuns devoted to educational and charitable work, according to a news release from the United States Attorney’s Office.

Gagnon represented herself as an expert in handling short sale and foreclosure transactions and offered to assist RJM in buying a small home in San Diego for use by retired and infirm sisters, prosecutors said.

Instead, Gagnon used the funds to pay for her personal expenses – burning through the entire $285,000 in only 64 days, the release stated.

In addition to her prison sentence, Gagnon ordered to pay full restitution to the nuns.
