The Legends Football League—formerly known as the Lingerie Football League—on Thursday announced the creation of an expansion team in New Hampshire.
The New England Liberty will play at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester starting in June 2016.
“Launching a New England franchise was a goal we set at the inception of the sport in 2009,” said LFL Chairman Mitchell Mortaza in a statement. “We believe the Verizon Wireless Arena in New Hampshire provides us a great building and support staff as well as being centrally located within New England.”
The LFL is a women’s tackle football league played indoors. Players are scantily clad in bikinis and also wear shoulder pads and helmets. The league has faced criticism for objectifying women to appeal to audiences. It also faces concerns about player safety, similar to those against the NFL.
At the same time, the league is growing. In September, it announced another expansion team in Austin, Texas. There are now eight teams across the country.
The league started as the Lingerie Football League in 2009 then rebranded itself the Legends Football League in 2013.
Mortaza spoke about his league in a recent interview with Metro New York.
“The uniforms are meant to draw initial interest from media and fans, but it’s the play on the field that has grown the sport over the years,” Mortaza said. “These women are truly incredible athletes.”
The Liberty’s season will kick off in April. They will play two games at the Verizon Wireless Arena—once on June 25 vs. the Chicago Bliss and again on July 23 against the Atlanta Steam. Tickets go on sale next week.

The Liberty will hold an open tryout on Sat, Dec. 19 at 11:30 a.m. at Turf Time Tewksbury in Tewksbury, Mass.
“We welcome what has become one of sports’ best live experiences to Verizon Wireless Arena,” arena General Manager Tim Bechert said in a statement. “New Hampshire and all of New England is rich in football history and fan fare, with the arrival of the New England Liberty, New England natives can now enjoy football year-round.”
