Fashion show guests were invited to tour art studios and spaces of 400 West Rich before the show, and more art was on display at the afterparty. This year’s fashion show sold-out in record time and a second (sell-out) show was added. All ticket purchases supported student scholarships.

Nine designers—eight Fashion Design seniors and one Master of Fine Arts candidate had designs in this year’s show.

“This year’s fashion show featured a wide range of work with every student bringing something different to the table,” said Suzanne Cotton, chair of Fashion Design. “During the pandemic, the students were learning remotely, which forced them to tap into themselves for inspiration. As a result, each designer developed a unique, individual style.”

The looks selected by the jurors for the show represent a range of influences and construction techniques, from vintage ‘60s-era looks to Japanese “visual kei”-inspired goth streetwear, from “nude” designs that embrace the feminine form in all shapes to those inspired by traditional Guatemalan dress.

For the first time, all looks and all students presented to the jurors made it in to the show.

Calix Jace who describes his collection Kinzoku no Akuma (Metal Devil) as ‘J-fashion, gothic, idiosyncratic’ saying “My creative process for this collection has been a few years in the making and I’m excited to finally show everyone what I’m capable of.”

Nicole Klein who describes her collection nood as ‘flirty, confident, sparkle’ saying “Bodies in all shapes, sizes and colors are beautiful and we should be able to show them off without having to worry about making others uncomfortable.”

Maria Mendoza who describes her collection Heritage as ‘colorful, avant-garde, chic’ saying “I never felt truly Guatemalan because I left at such a young age and grew up in the US. I felt that this collection is my way of reconnecting with my heritage.”

Skylar Rice who describes her collection ABIOGENESIS as ‘handcrafted, natural, eclectic’ saying “I developed a passion for natural design and gathering inspiration from the outdoors and the world around me that I had never really seen in my own work before.”

Austin Tootle who describes his collection Serene Queen as ‘seductive, vintage, fierce’ saying “Certain aspects of the collection are the shoulder pads in the coat to show a strong backbone, but once the coat is revealed, the sexy lingerie shows a vulnerable side.”

Crystal Zhang who describes her collection Metamorphosis as ‘avant-garde, flamboyant, lively’ saying ‘Metamorphosis not only happens through the whole collection but on each garment.”

On the late ’90s New York fashion circuit, there was only one place you’d find fairies, ballet, references to subcultures, rock stars in lingerie, and pretty much every supermodel of the time at once. That place was an Anna Sui runway show–in particular, the spring 1997 presentation, which took place in October 1996. The glitzy fairy wings, backless forest nymph dresses, and black lace mini dresses on display—not to mention the stars of the show, Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers walking the runway in lingerie—have all led to endless mood board saves and Pinterest re-pins to this day.

At the time, the label had just reached significant growth: Anna Sui had a new store in Soho, fragrance and cosmetic licenses, and an undeniable aesthetic that merged popular subcultures of the time—like grunge, Goth, and punk—with a vintage sensibility and a highly detailed approach to rich fabric combinations. Even more than 20 years later, Anna Sui’s spring 1997 runway collection feels impactful, as subcultures flourish and continue to inspire designers, and fashion turns its eye toward fantasy during turbulent times. The glitter makeup from the show, smushed under the eyes of the models by François Nars, feels incredibly topical against today’s backdrop of Euphoria and the return of the mid 2000s indie sleaze era. As Sui’s Y2K-era work skyrockets in pop culture, people young and old alike continue to covet her runway pieces. To keep up that nostalgia-fueled demand, Sui even recently collaborated with SSENSE on a capsule collection inspired by her 2001 Mud Club collection.

Back in the ’90s, the biggest names in the industry appeared on her catwalks, and the spring 1997 show was no exception—Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Amber Valletta, and the late Stella Tennant were faces of the season. Sui’s close friend, Steven Meisel, helped cast her shows and pulled in many of the big-name models. “It was really a fun time because it was very intimate,” Sui tells W. “I was really good friends with a lot of the models and it was almost like a party scene backstage, at every show.”

But having a rocker-slash-celebrity walk the runway felt new—and spoke to Sui’s focus on hosting dynamic shows that felt celebratory, fresh, and different. Sui first met Navarro at a festival in San Francisco, chatted him up, and asked, spur of the moment, if he would ever want to be in her show. “Then he said, ‘Well, only if there’s lingerie involved,’” Sui recalls. “He flew in for his fitting and walked into our office, took off all his clothes and he said, ‘You’re the artist. I’m the clay. Mold me.’ Everybody in the room just about dropped dead.” Sui ended up dressing him in a lingerie top and entire leather pieces for the show–many of which were hand-detailed. (All pieces in the collection were made in the U.S., with crochet and knits all handmade.)

That season, Sui found inspiration in fairies and classic ballet. “I had tons of pictures of Rudolf Nureyev on my wall,” she says, referencing the Soviet-born ballet dancer. She had watched a documentary about Nureyev—the subject matter of which inspired the poet shirts, artisanal cutouts, braiding, and whipstitch-edge jackets she ultimately designed for the collection. Sui’s longtime hairstylist, Garren, meanwhile, spoke to the ballet side of the inspiration, creating chignons with loose and wavy tendrils falling around the models’ faces.

Hole’s “Gold Dust Woman” and The Cardigans’s Lovefool rang out in New York City’s Bryant Park tents while models stomped down the runway wearing flippy sarong skirts, low-slung leather pants, and hippie takes on corporate suiting; buttons coming undone and jackets swung on shoulders as they neared the end of the runway. The show presented decidedly different moods, opening with more casual, breezy separates before turning to minimal suiting—and later, black lace spiked with vibrant lemon-yellow and lilac. Navarro could be seen walking in several of these varying “moods,” but his most iconic and lasting moment was, without a doubt, following Naomi Campbell on the runway, wearing a black lace dress with hearts over the bust.

Sui cast the model Iris Palmer as the “tipsy fairy,” wearing one of the pairs of angelic fairy wings in the show. “I watched Max Reinhardt’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and I loved how everything twinkled,” Sui says. “So I found this great fabric that was like crinkled chiffon, but it had glitter prints on it.” Sui asked James Coviello, the man behind her visionary knits, to make fairy wings that matched the dresses perfectly. “He could make anything,” Sui adds.

Another epic accessory that transcended reality? The dripping beaded snake necklace designed by jeweler Karen Erickson—which, from far away, looked quite realistic, trailing down the model’s necks to their arms. “It took days and days to make it, because there were just so many beads, it was so dense and it was kind of heavy,” says Sui. “But that’s Karen. She just goes there and makes it more deluxe than you could ever imagine.”

Moments before the show closed, model Kirsty Hume strutted onto the runway in a flowing black slip dress with slivers of fabric walking to the tune of Marilyn Manson’s “The Beautiful People.” Others followed in an all-back wardrobe. Navarro wore leather pants and a black cropped wrap top. Campbell sported a printed gauzy black slip dress. It was all very Black Swan. “It was a very unique time because the focus was New York at that point,” Sui says. “We had the supermodels that really walked—like really worked—the runway. When you go back and look at those shows, you can see what a great time everyone was having.”

By the time the spring 1997 show bowed, Sui was one to watch at New York Fashion Week and a fixture among the international fashion crowd. She attracted top editors, models, and creatives despite not having a legacy of fashion shows behind her. (After all, Sui started her brand in 1980 after studying at Parsons and working for a few small sportswear labels. In 1991, she had her first runway show.) Today, she’s one of the few remaining female designers of New York’s ’90s grunge era still designing on a major scale. Her appeal lies in her layered approach to color, texture, and fabrics—looks in high demand as maximalist fashion rises—but also the nostalgia of her fun shows, where models paraded around expressively. The spring 1997 collection proved that dynamic subcultural references, a directional take on fabrics, and—perhaps most of all—tons of celebrities by way of models and music stars, will always be remembered.

BROOKFIELD, Wis. – They see the Russia investigation as President Donald Trump does, as a witch hunt that has expanded far beyond its initial mandate with the explicit aim of delegitimizing or perhaps even overturning his 2016 election victory.

Yet these most steadfast of Trump supporters who gathered here Tuesday night as part of a focus group evaluating public opinion said the president ought not fire special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, a view shared by the Trump critics around the table.

“People would be suspicious,” said Betsy Novak, 55, a greenhouse worker who voted for Trump.

“It [would be] hiding something,” said Curt Hetzel, 48, a shipping and receiving manager who also voted for Trump.

“Politically, it would be a terrible idea,” said yet another Trump backer, Sam Goldner, 25, a warehouse manager.

These three were among the 12 men and women assembled for a two-hour focus group in this Milwaukee suburb, a perennial suburban swing area in a state that helped propel Trump to a surprise victory and is home to competitive Senate and gubernatorial contests this fall.

The opinions voiced here Tuesday night about Trump’s governing record and conduct in office – as well as the intensifying Mueller investigation – largely split along party lines, a vivid illustration of the deep divides across the country ahead of the November midterm elections.

“Partisan America is alive and well in Wisconsin,” Peter D. Hart, a longtime Democratic pollster who led the focus group here on behalf of Emory University, said in reflection. “I felt that people are pretty frozen in place. The one thing they agreed with was Robert Mueller should not be fired. That’s about as close as they get to a unified position.”

The dozen people were selected as part of Emory University’s “Dialogue with America” focus group series because of their diverse backgrounds and because they make up a cross-section of political attitudes, though their statements are not a scientific representation of overall opinion.

Asked to name their favorite president in their lifetimes, half said Ronald Reagan, three said Barack Obama and one each said Trump, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter.

Overall, they were pessimistic about the state of the country as Trump nears 500 days in office, with all but two saying the nation was more divided than it is united. They overwhelmingly used negative words to describe America today: “Frenetic,” “bad,” “tense,” “chaotic,” “uncivil,” “unrest” and “indecisive.”

“We’re constantly battling,” said Michael Ross, 36, a judicial assistant who supported Hillary Clinton over Trump.

Though the group was quick to give Trump credit for the steady economy, job growth and changes to the tax code, they also blamed the president for a host of national ailments – from racial unrest to a decline in credibility and an intentional blurring of the truth by disputing facts.

All 12 of the assembled voters said they were following news about the Mueller probe, and their views of the special counsel were colored by their feelings about the president. Those who oppose Trump described Mueller as “intelligent,” “respected,” “smart,” “diligent” and “unstoppable.” But Trump’s supporters called the former Marine Corps captain and FBI director “unethical,” “desperate,” “partisan” and “a liar.”

Meredith Legree, 36, a physician’s assistant who voted for Trump, said, “This investigation’s ongoing because people aren’t happy that Trump is in power and they’re looking for any way to get him out.”

But Michelle Price, 52, a medical research assistant who voted for Clinton, said Mueller must keep following the facts. Of Trump, she said, “his character is making me believe that [collusion] did happen. I want them to keep investigating and let me know for sure.”

Added Atanu Deb Baruah, 48, a marketing director who also backed Clinton, “Let the investigators continue. Let them do their job. Let’s not try to obstruct.”

Trump’s opponents delivered even scathing assessments, indicating that the president has significant work to do to expand his base of support. Two people called him “untrustworthy,” and others said he was “immoral,” “not credible,” a “liar” and “disgusting.”

Why disgusting?

“I have a daughter,” said Steven Midthun, 54, a public schools librarian who voted for Clinton.

But Trump’s backers said they saw the president as a bold innovator who has been misrepresented by the media.

“He’s not given a fair shot,” Novak said.

The focus group participants spoke with particular disdain for leaders in Congress. Asked to assess House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., who represents a nearby district and is retiring at the end of the year, they were lukewarm, describing him as “a good person” and “smart,” but “not the right personality for the job” and “done.”

Asked about House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who could succeed Ryan as speaker should Democrats retake the House majority, 10 of the 12 people used negative descriptions. She was described as “hyperbolic” and “unethical,” and five people said she was either “too old,” “done” or “time to retire.”

Some of the Trump backers showed flashes of dissatisfaction with the president. Asked to describe him in one word, Hetzel chose “egotistical,” explaining, “He’s so used to just getting his way.”

Hetzel and other Trump backers agreed that their biggest disappointment in the president has been his tweets and decisions to engage on what they see as petty issues.

“It’s almost childish,” Hetzel said. “You’re a 70-something-year-old man and you’re president of the United States. You should be a little more mature and pick better subjects to be tweeting about.”

Another supporter of the president, Randy Cera, said Trump’s tweets make him vulnerable in the media.

“The tweets are fuel for the fire,” said Cera, 52, an insurance agent. “It helps validate the negativity.”

Despite their misgivings, however, these voters exhibited loyalty to Trump – going so far as to continue the president’s personal feud with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., even as he is at home battling brain cancer. McCain has tangled with Trump and opposed high-profile administration priorities, and this past week the White House has refused to apologize for communications aide Kelly Sanders joking in an internal meeting about McCain being irrelevant because “he’s dying anyway.”

While other focus group participants called McCain heroic or strong or patriotic, Cera said the Arizona senator was “petty.” And Stephen Rozmenoski, 66, a machinist, labeled him a “turncoat,” presumably because of his vote against the Republican health-care bill last year, for which Trump repeatedly has attacked McCain.

“If anybody has a doubt about how solid the Trump core is, come listen to this group,” Hart said. “They couldn’t even find a nice word to say about John McCain.”
