Angels on the rooftop: Camp kids repair local homes

IRMO, SC (WIS) -
Rose Davis has angels on the roof of her Irmo home this week.
“This is an answered prayer,” she said.
The angels are students from Lake Murray Salkehatchie camp, hosted by Union United Methodist Church in Irmo. While their friends are having fun at the pool or at the beach this week, the teens are doing repairs on five homes throughout the Irmo area.
“We’re doing as much overhaul as we can do in five days time,” Assistant Site Leader Mike Johnson said.
“A lot of kids take a lot of things for granted and we come out here and we see how some people have it really rough and we can help them out and it’s really satisfying to help those people” said Robert E. Lee Academy senior Kayla McCutcheon.
The kids’ camp fees helped buy materials and supplies necessary for repairs. The local religious community donated to the program, including providing meals for the kids.
“We’ve been praying for a lot of years,” Davis said.
“This is really eye-opening because it shows that, like, we take everything for granted,” Wofford College freshman Constance Campbell said. “We just don’t realize how lucky we are. We really just don’t.”
As a single mother, Davis struggled to put her two kids through college, not leaving much money for home repairs.
“The Lord made me understand that he didn’t want these two kids to be a statistic. He wanted them to go to college,” she said.
Despite her financial limitations, Davis donated what items she could to a charity called Sharing God’s Love. The organizers passed her name and need along to the church.
“Because she feels other people are in more need than she is, God has a great way of working things out for people, you know?” Johnson said. “Here she is, she gave so much, and now she’s getting this back.”
“It was in giving that I was able to receive such a large blessing,” Davis said. “It was in giving that God turned around and gave me so, so much more. In helping others, you can receive.”
“Being at the beach is great and all,” Greenville High School sophomore Christopher Riley said. “But doing this is better since we know it’s helping out everyone in our community.”
“It means more because they didn’t come in to only work. They came in with love,” Davis said. “When they’re here, it’s almost like they’re family. We bonded from the moment we met.
