More in store at Mayflower Mall

Several new store openings and some recent changes and expansions by existing retailers have combined to create a new look to sections of the mall.

“There were a lot of changes at the mall this year,” said Greg Morrison, general manager of the Mayflower Mall. “And the response from the public has been very favourable. I think some of the changes in the mall gave people even more reasons to want to shop here.”

Gift store Spencer’s opened in the mall in February, the Coffee Pro opened its doors in May, lingerie retailer La Vie en Rose launched a store in August, and women’s clothing retailer Maurices opened its first Atlantic Canadian location at the Mayflower Mall in October.

Morrison said it was nice to see a retailer like Maurices choosing Sydney as its inaugural expansion into the region.

“When their head office people came to visit, they got it. They understood that it was a good market and a good centre to launch their store,” he said.

In addition to new openings, Morrison said several existing stores expanded or changed locations within the mall.

“We expanded on the SoftMoc store, which is doing well, and then most recently we moved Reitmans and Indigo (formerly Coles) both into larger stores in the mall,” he said.

Morrison said cosmetics retailer Faces also moved locations in the mall, and the neighbouring spaces that Reitmans, Faces, and Coles have moved out of will now become part of an expansion by SportChek and new washrooms for the main mall.

“(SportChek) is very excited to expand here in the mall,” he said.

After closing temporarily early in the year, Italian restaurant East Side Mario’s also reopened at the mall in November under new owner Mike Kenny.

Some other stores underwent name or branding changes this year.

“The Future Shop was the first change with it changing to the parent company of Best Buy and then the Hudson Bay sign changed to HBC,” he said.

Overall, Morrison said 2015 has been a good one for the mall and its 73 tenants.

“It’s been a good year. We’re ahead of last year from a sales standpoint,” he said.

Morrison noted that the only down month, in terms of sales, was September, when many Cape Bretoners spent their Saturdays on the road to Inverness for the Chase the Ace fundraiser that gripped the entire island.

“Chase the Ace were getting between 15,000 to 17,000 people and a lot of people that normally might be shopping here that day (were in Inverness),” he said.

Now with Christmas less than 10 days away, Morrison said things are very busy at the mall and they’re gearing up for their annual midnight madness event Friday night when all stores will stay open until midnight.
