Victoria’s Secret Show 2015: model line-up and tense casting process revealed

When

The Victoria’s Secret Show takes place on Tuesday 10 November, but will air on televisions a month later on CBS on 8 December at 10:00pm EST.

Where

The lingerie extravaganza is returning to its home, New York, to celebrate its 20th anniversary following last year’s London show (only the second show ever in Europe after Cannes in 2000).

The performers

Rihanna was confirmed last month, alongside Selena Gomez and The Weeknd. But last week it was confirmed that RiRi has cancelled to reportedly focus on finishing her upcoming album, Anti. Brit girl Ellie Goulding will replace her.

The casting

A newly-released video shows the reality of the tense audition process, where supermodels cry and celebrate as they walk in their lingerie and heels, surrounded by white lights, in front of what models describe as “very nice and friendly” judges.

“You’re meant to be objective about it, but you know how hard all the girls have all worked for it,” says the lingerie giant’s boss Ed Razek at the casting.

For many spectators though, this annual catwalk show sexualises women. And well, there’s no arguing with the fact that that the multimillion pound show does indeed feature a parade of smiling, stunning models covered in glitter and wearing very little clothes. But truth is that for models and their agencies, landing a Victoria’s Secret gig means “champagne popping in the offices across model worlds, because their careers kind of explode”.

This year, 500 models were submitted for consideration, but only 44 have made it the final cut.

The cast

With 44 models confirmed, this year’s line-up is the biggest cast in the Victoria’s Secret Show history.

The lingerie giant revealed last week the addition of two of the world’s most high profile models of the moment, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid, to the cast.

Martha Hunt isn’t just getting her first-ever Angel wings this year—she’s getting one of the shows’ top honors.

As if being one of the freshly crowned ten new Angels weren’t already huge, Martha will also sport the blinged-out, bespoke Swarovski lingerie creation at the fast-approaching 2015 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. To put it in plain English: It’s the number two honor in the show, second only to being chosen to model the Fantasy Bra. And just one day out from the highly-anticipated event, WWD is offering up an up-close look at the majorly luxurious piece, plus some insight as to the craftsmanship that went into the ornate design.

And as you might’ve already guessed, this is no ordinary corset—it’s handmade by Parisian couturier Serkan Cura, and adorned with more than 90,000 crystal embellishments.

“I know [in advance] who will wear each look,” Cura, who’s worked on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show costumes for three seasons now, told WWD of his design process. “I take all the measurements, I make all the composites. It’s why you can see that everything fits perfectly, and the Swarovski crystals won’t hurt [the models'] skin…Everything is perfectly done. We gave so much energy and passion into each look.”

Oh, and let’s not neglect those luminous golden Angel wings either, which boast more than 20,000 crystal embellishments of their own in addition to the 130 feet of LED lights, 1,200 individual lights and (of course) a hidden battery pack.

“I’ve worn wings before, but these are special,” 26-year-old Hunt told WWD of the 19-pound wings. “They’re heavier than ever before and light up like a firework…”

Not to imply anything, but fellow Angel Lily Aldridge—who received the ultimate kudos of wearing the Fantasy Bra this year—did sport the Swarovski piece last year. So Martha: This could mean there’s a (potential) major promotion in the works for you next year!
