It’s no secret that super-skinny models are considered the norm in the fashion industry, but one retailer took things too far, and its customers didn’t hesitate to express their discontent.
On Sunday, Michael Rudoy took to Twitter to share an image of a thin mannequin with visible ribs that he came across at lingerie brand La Perla‘s store in New York City’s Soho neighborhood. Clearly upset by how skinny the mannequin was, Rudoy captioned the picture:
“How does #LaPerla think ribs on a mannequin is ok?! @SethMatlins,” he wrote. (Seth Matlins is an advocate for truth in advertising).
Other Twitter users were also upset by the mannequin’s appearance and responded to Rudoy’s tweet.
“@mrudoy @SethMatlins This is just irresponsible and harmful. Too many young girls already have low self esteem and body image issues,” one user wrote.
“@sethmatlins @edcoalition @laperlalingerie @mrudoy Agreed! Please discontinue use of ALL anorexic mannequins in ALL your stores. #IEDAction,” another person tweeted.
Shortly after Rudoy shared the image, La Perla responded apologetically on Twitter and attempted to rectify the sticky situation.
“We have an update on this issue: The mannequin photographed has been removed from the store and will not be used again by any La Perla boutique. We are in the process of redesigning all La Perla stores with a new concept image and the mannequins that are currently displayed in our U.S. stores will no longer be used. We appreciate and value everyone’s comments, thank you for bringing this to our attention,” the intimate apparel brand wrote.

The upscale lingerie store La Perla came under fire this week after a photo of a store mannequin with protruding ribs went viral on the Internet.
The picture snapped at the New York store by a Twitter user named Michael Rudoy showed a mannequin in the store window in red lingerie with protruding ribs.

Quickly the picture started to make the rounds across the Internet with many users calling the mannequin too thin and a bad message for people with eating disorders. The Alliance for Eating Disorder Awareness tweeted that the mannequin was “terrible!”
Even some people in the fashion industry used to seeing wafer-thin figures wrote that the mannequin went too far. Louise O’Reilly, a plus-sized model from England wrote that she was “shocked” after seeing the picture.
Shocked by La Perla’s mannequins this is a terrible step back for body image.
