Who doesn’t hate catching their rear view in a mirror and seeing an extra roll bursting out under a bra strap?
For years Staci Berner of North Potomac was in search of a solution to just that problem. She didn’t have a problem with the front—it was the back that was troublesome.
The solution? Berner couldn’t find one. “I thought it was ridiculous that nobody carried a bra that hid back fat,” she says. Finally, even though she had no real sewing experience, she decided to try making a bra herself.
After much trial and error, Berner succeeded. She made a fully supportive bra with a sleek, camisole back—Shapeez.
When her husband created a first website in 2009, the site got 500 hits in a couple of weeks.
“I think this is a business,” he told her. She says that since then Shapeez has grown, garnering the attention of celebrities including makeup artist Bobbi Brown and talk-show host Wendy Williams.
The flattering bras come in long, short and lacy styles and start at $75.
For Margaret Bruns of Annapolis and Laura Byer of Potomac, it wasn’t the back—it was the front that was spilling out.
They were in search of pretty lingerie with enough bust support and coverage to keep breakfast with the kids or friends on vacation G-rated.
When they couldn’t find anything in the stores, the friends got together and brainstormed. After trying several different fabrics and styles, they launched UpliftingNighties.com in October.
The flattering nightgowns and loungewear don’t only keep the girls contained inside built-in shelf bra, they are soft and sexy, too.
The nightgowns ($95) are made of modal polyester and spandex and are machine washable.
They come in a number of pretty styles and colors, and would make a welcome holiday gift for a busy mom, or any woman, on your list. Look for new styles to be released next month.
