Stays—otherwise known as whalebone corsets—were everyday wardrobe staples for “proper” women of the eighteenth century. Yes, these undergarments don’t look like the sexy bustier-corsets of today, but they were essential in molding the ideal body form: a tiny waist and pushed-up breasts. As Colleen Hill notes in Exposed: A History of Lingerie, the French ceremonial ritual of the toilette, a morning routine of undressing and dressing in front of the court, involved putting on a stay. Women performing the toilette would linger on the undergarments, hinting at the sexual intimacy and voyeurism involved.

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, police in St. Pete are warning about an organized effort to steal women’s lingerie.
Last month, detectives say, the Victoria’s Secret store in Tyrone Square Mall was hit three times. On each occasion, surveillance cameras captured the suspects stealing more than $2,500 worth of women’s undergarments.
“The suspects appear to be well-organized, with some acting as lookouts and distracters while the theft is occurring,” a police department spokesperson stated.

Detectives say they believe these suspects are related to an organized group targeting retail stores in malls and factory outlets throughout Florida.
They are asking anyone with tips to call St. Petersburg police at 727-893-7780.
