Underneath It All: The Steamy Details On the Lingerie In Fifty Shades of Grey

When we spoke to Mark Bridges, the man responsible for all the costumes in Fifty Shades of Grey, he gave us the deets on Anastasia Steele’s outfits and Christian Grey’s sexy-sharp suits (and one pair of destroyed denim), but what we really wanted to know was everything that went on behind closed doors, if you know what we mean. Once the lights dim and the clothes come off, what should we expect to see?

“It’s interesting—there’s not that much lingerie in this particular version,” Bridges tells InStyle. “For their first time, we wanted to create the best possible version of reality, so I went with a white lace-trimmed Hanro cotton bra and panty. It signifies virginity. It’s pretty, it’s practical, it’s simple.”

We see the white cotton briefs in the trailer (shop it: Hanro bikini, $45; hanrousa.com), but the one other instance that’s not shown is the soft turquoise Stella McCartney lingerie set in subsequent X-rated scenes.

“Stella McCartney is actually a friend of Sam [Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director],” Bridges explains. “The company searched around the world for multiples of each piece. In future installments, we’ll continue to use beautiful lingerie of Stella’s. For this one, we just used that one pair.”
